About Us
A young American created Fat Tire Bike Tours in Paris, France in May 1999 and since that first day, the company has led hundreds of thousands of customers through Paris, Versailles and Normandy on bicycle.
In 2003 Fat Tire was asked to lead a group of journalists around Paris while riding on the new state of the art machines called Segways. While we rode bicycles, the journalists rode Segways and we were only permitted to try out the Segways at the Louvre.
The machines were fantastic and the ease at which one could maneuver was impressive. Suddenly we were much more photographed and interesting to others than the Louvre’s pyramid and bingo, the idea for City Segway Tours was born. Since these humble beginnings in 2003, we have expanded to open multiple operations in both Europe and the USA. As soon as we opened in Washington, DC, we knew we had yet another destination perfectly suited for Segways. It became abundantly clear that the history of the White House or the Washington Monument didn’t change if you were walking, riding on a Segway, or riding a tour bus. But with the distance between these sites, we realized you could get closer on Segway without tiring yourself from walking.
Our unique mix of tour guides provide informative and entertaining tours, regardless of whether our guests have been in Washington, DC for 30 years or 30 minutes. Our office is a healthy mix of locals and transplants who all share a passion for the city of Washington, its people, its history and its future. Being able to interact with each tour group ensures that visitors to DC are shown a wonderful overview of our amazing city, while being flexible enough to make sure that long-time residents aren’t bored with information they already know.
After leading tens of thousands guests around Washington, DC, we knew it was time to come back to how we started: bike tours. Segways are a fantastic way to see a city, but they can have limits. City laws prevent them from going on certain paths, taking children under 16, or riding at full speed. We wanted to make sure that between both Segway tours and bike tours, we could offer visitors and locals alike all the best, most environmentally friendly ways to see DC.
And so after twelve years of bike tours, and eight years of Segway tours we are pleased to say that in May 2011, Capital City Bike Tours - Washington, DC opened.
We take great pride in our customer service here at City Segway Tours/Capital City Bike Tours and the results can be seen in our high rankings at user-driven sites like TripAdvisor and Yelp. If you have a less than excellent experience while on one of our tours, let us know and we’ll work with you to make things right.
We guarantee that any of our tours will give you the most fun on two wheels - We hope to see you soon!

Awesome
The idea of walking three kids (12, 10, 7) around DC on a muggy day had me really worried. Then, I stumbled upon Capital City Bike Tours!
We all had a great time biking around the city and seeing all the sights. Our guide, John, was knowlegeable and personable and also took good care of us throughout the tour. We had plenty of time to see all the major sights and we all finished the tour happy but not exhausted.
I would recommend this to anyone looking to get a great introduction to DC, especially families!
